“ Rich noisy texture, bitcrushed synth riffs, and floor-rumbling beats: this is the machine-driven music of Beirut-born and Montreal-based producer, DJ, and performer Lilane Chlela. She makes electronic music that is collage-like in its morphing unpredictability. From upbeat techno to brooding noise, there isn’t a frequency left untouched in her repertoire. In single Rave Melancho (2023), a barrage of rave beats is shattered by a heartwarming orchestral interlude. Elsewhere, with Jurk (2023), funky syncopated techno beats perforate Chlela’s minimal melodic sequences and atmospheric pads. Her recent album Safala (2021) is flush with brash distorted synthesisers, field recordings, and harsh bass drums. It’s an album that has both the peculiarly alluring and thought-provoking qualities of a noise record and the movement-inducing qualities of a dance record. Samples are stretched and dragged into sonic obliteration as Chlela’s characteristic sense of melody and tone drives the tracks forward. Tracks like “Zaybak w rsas” vibrate with rave sirens and perpetual drops, while “Safala” brims with ravenous, captivating, undulating noise. Chlela’s music moves its listener; trust that it will bring you somewhere you’ve never been when she performs a new live set of music from her forthcoming album.
